NEW: Relocating from out of state? Qualified candidates may be eligible for a relocation reimbursement stipend of up to $2,500 to help ease your transition to Gilbert PD. Stipend amounts may vary based on location and availability. 

Lateral officers will be sworn as a peace officer in the state of Arizona after passing the AZPOST waiver exam in lieu of attending a training academy. Field training consists of 3 weeks of classroom courses followed by 12–16 weeks of patrol training with a Field Training Officer.

Lateral officers are hired at their equivalent whole year of service up to step #7 and may participate in the promotional process after one year with Gilbert, provided they have three total years of service.

Physical Agility Test

Minimum Required: 
  • Sit Ups: 36 (within 1 minute)  
  • Push Ups: 20 (untimed)  
  • 1.5 Mile Run: 15:48 minutes

Out of State Applicant Information

Out of state applicants should anticipate traveling to Arizona during the hiring process (excluding initial physical fitness test). 

After passing the online written test via the National Testing Network and physical fitness test, a background investigator will contact you to schedule remaining in-person tests. 

Senate Bill 1369

Under Senate Bill 1369, the State of Arizona now permits any law enforcement agency within the state the ability to seek reimbursement for the costs of training and certifying a peace officer within the state. The reimbursement may include the costs of training and certification, travel, housing, and salary during the training and certification period. 

The following reimbursement schedule is applied: 

  • 1 – 12 months, 100% reimbursement  
  • 12 – 24 months, 75% reimbursement  
  • 24 – 36 months, 50% reimbursement  
  • 36 months or more, 0% reimbursement 

Note: Lateral police officer applicants are not responsible for the reimbursements. The hiring agency is responsible for the training and certification reimbursement.
